Nigeria’s anti graft agency secures conviction of 6 cyber criminals
Effort by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, in combating cybercrime in Kwara, north central Nigeria, and its surroundings have led to the conviction of six suspects by Justice Evelyn Anyadike of the Federal High Court in Ilorin, the state capital.
The convicts come from various states such as Kogi, Kwara, Osun, and Ogun.
The convicts are Ismail Abdulbasit from Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State; Oladipo Victor from Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State; Ibrahim Oluwatosin from Ipetumodu in Osun State; Ayantola Segun Samuel from Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State; Musbau Waris Atomo from Orolu Local Government Area of Osun State and one Babalola Rasaq Oluwadamilare from Ogun State.
They were part of a group of 50 suspects, including students from Kwara State University and residents of Malete, who were arrested for internet fraud-related offenses.
The recent convictions bring the total number of convicted individuals to 30.
The charges against the convicts included fraudulent impersonation and obtaining money through deceptive means.
They were found guilty and sentenced to various jail terms.
The court also imposed fines on some of the convicts and ordered the forfeiture of their phones and the money obtained through their illegal activities to the Federal Government.
The EFCC’s prosecution team presented evidence, including statements from the defendants and recovered items, to support the charges against the convicts.
The court, after reviewing the facts of the cases, handed down the judgments and penalties to the individuals involved in the cybercrimes.
