Nigeria’s counter-insurgency chief ambushed by terrorists

The convoy of the Commandant of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operation, Major General Farouq Yahaya was attacked on Sunday by terrorists believed to be Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants.
Major General Yahaya, it could be recalled, assumed head of Operation Lafiya Dole in April 2020.
He was reportedly attacked at Garin Kuturu village between Auno and Jakana towns along the Maiduguri —Damaturu highway.
It was gathered that two soldiers were reported to have died during the cross-fire fight between the troops and the terrorists.
It is not clear how many insurgents were killed during the encounter but it was reported that they took away one gun truck.
ISWAP, it could also be recalled, broke away from Boko Haram in 2016 after a battle for leadership of the terror group.
