Nnamdi Kanu’s conviction is good for Ndigbo

I watched Mr. Aloy Ejimakor, who identifies as Nnamdi Kanu’s special counsel and recently as his legal consultant, where he tried to play his usual tribal cards on a matter that is purely criminal.

Aloy Ejimakor failed to convince his client to present a defence in his criminal trial and rather aided him as he came to the court, day after day to make a poor attempt at comedy play. Aloy had a good chance to ask the questions he was asking before the cameras and microphones, in court, but he didn’t utilise those opportunities. It appears that the Urualla born septuagenarian only speaks eloquently when there are cameras and recording gadgets before him, but loses his confidence when he is in a court of law and facing a Judge.

The validity or otherwise of his claims about Nnamdi Kanu’s legal chances at appeal will be tested in the next few months, but, I will want to clarify that his constant attempt at trivialising Nnamdi Kanu’s criminal activities as an Igbo agenda, is insulting and insensitive.

Every true and conscientious Igbo is happy with the Federal Government of Nigeria for pursuing this matter to a conclusion, because Nnamdi Kanu’s atrocities affected Ndigbo more than any other tribe in Nigeria. In fact, more than 90% of those who fell victim to Nnamdi Kanu’s terrorist activities are Igbos, and it would have amounted to an unforgivable miscarriage of justice had the federal government failed to prosecute the terrorist to a logical conclusion.

While I acknowledge Barrister Aloy Ejimakor’s right to explore his options of appeal, I would wish to emphasize that the average Igbo is not excited about a continuous prolongation of this matter by those who seem to be benefiting from the volatility of the Southeast.

Nnamdi Kanu’s conviction has brought a closure to thousands of families across the Southeast that lost their loved ones to Kanu’s militants, and anyone who followed Justice James Omotosho’s Judge would be satisfied that the honourable priest of justice did a thorough job and was even lenient to Kanu in some instances, as it was expected that he would give him the maximum sentence of death, for his atrocious acts against residents and indigenes of the Southeast.

Among other things, it should serve as warning to anyone or group of people who might be contemplating the kind of destructive actions that defined Nnamdi Kanu’s inglorious reign, that the hands of justice will catch up with them. Setting Nnamdi Kanu free would have thrown the Southeast into a major political and social crisis that we might not have survived.

By resisting all attempts made by individuals like Ejimakor to frustrate Kanu’s trial, the FG has demonstrated beyond reasonable doubts that it values the peace and stability of the Southeast region and I, alongside millions of Igbos and residents of the Southeast are grateful to the FG for this unforgettable show of concern and solidarity with our people.
