The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced it will form an alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election, a party spokesman said Monday.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, NNPP National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson confirmed that while the party will align with the ADC at the presidential level, it will still field candidates for other elections.
The announcement follows the defection of Rabiu Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, to the ADC. Johnson stressed that Kwankwaso’s exit would not weaken the party, noting that opposition leaders are working to create a united platform for Nigerians ahead of the next election.
Kwankwaso formally registered as an ADC member in Kano State on Monday, after weeks of consultations with top opposition figures, including ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, and Senator Seriake Dickson.
The development highlights both strategic realignment among opposition parties and ongoing tensions within the NNPP, particularly between Kwankwaso and his former ally, Kano Governor Abba Yusuf, who recently defected to the APC.
