‘No mercy on Israel’: Iran’s leader declares as ceasefire hangs by thread

As the conflict between Israel and Iran escalates into one of the Middle East’s most volatile confrontations in recent decades, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei issued his fiercest warning yet on Tuesday, June 17, 20125, calling for an uncompromising and aggressive response to Israeli strikes.
Khamenei issued this statement in a televised media briefing saying “We must give a strong response to the terrorist Zionist regime. “We will show the Zionists no mercy.”
His remarks come as Israel intensifies its aerial bombardment of Iranian military and nuclear targets — including the Natanz enrichment site, the Defense Ministry in Tehran, and state media headquarters — in a campaign it claims is designed to neutralize Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions.
Iran, in return, has launched waves of missile and drone attacks into Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv, killing civilians and damaging key infrastructure.
State officials in Tehran report over 220 Iranian casualties, mostly civilians, while Israeli sources confirm 24 deaths, including soldiers and emergency responders.
The Supreme Leader’s comments mark a dangerous rhetorical escalation.
While Iranian officials had previously couched their responses in terms of defense and deterrence, Khamenei’s use of the phrase “no mercy” signals a shift toward open confrontation.
His statement has rattled global diplomats, with calls for a ceasefire growing louder.
French President Emmanuel Macron warned of regional chaos, urging both sides to return to nuclear negotiations.
Diaspora Digital Media reported that the U.S. military has ramped up its regional presence but continues to deny direct involvement in the conflict.
Washington has also evacuated non-essential personnel from embassies in Iraq and the Gulf, as Iran has threatened to target U.S. military bases in Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE if they assist Israel.
In response to Khamenei’s statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue defending Israeli territory and accused Iran of harbouring nuclear ambitions and funding regional militias.
“Israel will not be intimidated. We will defend our citizens and our sovereignty,” Netanyahu said.
With both leaders doubling down and casualties mounting, the path to peace grows dimmer.
International observers fear that the rhetoric from Tehran — particularly from Khamenei — may mark the point of no return in a spiraling conflict with unpredictable consequences.
