The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of Ajara Lasisi, popularly known as Aunty Ajara, a respected and beloved actress in the Yoruba movie sector. She reportedly passed away in the early hours of Thursday, February 5, 2026, after a prolonged battle with illness.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by her brother, Ridwan Lasisi, who shared an emotional video message announcing her passing. Fighting back tears, he revealed that doctors officially confirmed her death that morning, marking the end of a difficult and painful period for the actress and her family.

“Good morning to you all. My name is Ridwan Lasisi. I am a brother to Ajara. The doctor confirmed to us this morning that Ajara has passed on,” he said.

He also made a solemn appeal, urging the public to stop sending funds to the bank account that had been shared for her medical treatment, explaining that the purpose of the fundraising had sadly come to an end.

“We appreciate the president and all industry members. We also use this opportunity to appeal to those sending money not to send it anymore. The one we are contributing for her sake is no more. Thank you so much. We do not want you to send money into that account again,” he added.

Aunty Ajara’s health condition became public knowledge just days before her death, after fellow Nollywood actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke made an emotional plea for assistance on social media. Oshodi-Oke disclosed that Ajara had been hospitalized in critical condition, relying on an oxygen machine, and that her health continued to decline despite intensive medical intervention and the rising cost of treatment.

Known for her commanding screen presence, maternal roles, and ability to portray deep emotional characters, Aunty Ajara carved a niche for herself in the Yoruba film industry. Over the years, she featured in several notable productions, including Gingerrr, Queen Lateefah, and Isiti, earning admiration for her authenticity and powerful performances.

Beyond her professional achievements, the late actress had been open about her personal struggles. In 2025, she revealed that she had endured the devastating loss of a child, a tragedy that deeply affected her life but also shaped the emotional depth she brought to her roles.

She leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances and a lasting impact on audiences who connected deeply with the stories she brought to life.

May her soul rest in perfect peace.
