The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have suspended the 7-day ultimatum it issued Chevron Nigeria Limited and its Contractors over the sack of workers through WhatsApp and other anti-labour actions and postures.
This was disclosed in a press release jointly signed by NUPENG National President, Comrade (Prince) Williams Akporeha and the General Secretary, Comrade Afolabi Olawale.
The press statement reads:
“The suspension was ordered by the leadership of the Union following the immediate recall and reinstatement of the sacked workers and the on-going discussions to quickly resolve other outstanding issues.
“However, NUPENG reiterates that the suspension of the strike ultimatum is not a total call off.
“[It is] a respect to on-going discussions the Union is having with Chevron and it Contractors over all the issues at stake.
“[We believe] that management will act in good faith and decently in line with principles of social dialogue.
“The leadership of the Union appreciates all relevant Government Agencies for their quick interventions on the matters in dispute.”
Earlier on August 23, 2020, NUPENG had denied meeting with Chevron over the strike ultimatum.
In a press statement published on its website and signed by National President Akporeha, the leadership of NUPENG disassociated itself from a purported report that it held a meeting with CHEVRON management over the 7-day strike ultimatum issued over sacking of some of its members.
The union stated that there was no such meeting and therefore the strike ultimatum remained intact.
The union urges it’s members nationwide to ignore the report, continue to be on red alert and mobilize for the impending strike action at the expiration of the ultimatum and should all be at red alert.
Chevron Nigeria Limited and its Contractors came under fire after they sacked workers through WhatsApp as well as “other anti-labour actions and postures”.
NUPENG reacted swiftly and issued a 7-day ultimatum to the oil giant.
