NYSC: Cash crunch stalls corpers' mobilization

Indication emerged that inadequate fund may stall mobilization of batch ‘A’ of prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

Corps members are supposed to be mobilized to camp on May 21, 2016.

At the interactive session with Senate Committee on Sport and Social Development, Director- General of NYSC, Sule Kazaure gave the hint on of the crunch in the agency.

He said series of letters of have been written to the Minister and Mr. President on the issue but the agency has not received favourable response.

Kazaure added that apart from funding other problem facing the scheme are Security of Corps members, subvention informing the committee that the budget of agency was slashed by 40 percent.

According to him, as at present, the required money for the exercise has not been provided by the Federal government despite series of efforts made to that effect through letters have not received favourable disposition.

He expressed dissatisfaction that the request for operational fund for the mobilization were forwarded to its supervising Minister, the Minister of budget and National Planning, Minister of finance and the presidency but yet to receive response up till now.

Buttressing the submission of NYSC Director -General, the Director of Finance, Mr. Adeleke Ademola explained the committee that series of letters had been written to both the Minister and Mr. President on this issue and up till now no favourable response on the issue.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Obinna Ogba revealed that the budget of the Ministry is short by N13 billion assuring that he will organise the meeting between the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Budget and National Planning and NYSC to address the issue.
