Obi condemns Enugu killings, demands urgent security action

The former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of several residents in Enugu State, describing the latest attack as another grim reminder of the unchecked violence spreading across Nigeria.

In a statement posted Tuesday on social media, Obi lamented the deaths and ongoing insecurity, especially in rural areas.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the attack took place on Sunday at about 4:30 p.m. in Ikpakpara village, Agamede, within the Eha-Amufu community in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, were dropped by helicopters that hovered above the community during the operation.

At least seven residents were killed, and two others are currently missing, according to local sources.

Obi, who ran for president in 2023 under the Labour Party, described the killings as heartbreaking and called for urgent, lasting measures to safeguard vulnerable communities.

He said the repeated assaults on Eha-Amufu were becoming too frequent and must no longer be tolerated by any responsible government.

In his post, Obi wrote:
“Yet another heartbreaking report of the brutal killing of innocent farmers in Ikpakpara village, Agamede, Eha-Amufu community in Enugu State.
My heart breaks for the Eha-Amufu people, for the grieving families, and for those still searching for their missing loved ones.”

He stressed that the community had suffered repeated attacks, which warranted more than just sympathy.

According to him, the situation demanded a permanent and practical solution to the escalating crisis.

“These killings must stop. We cannot keep watching communities bleed without justice or protection,” he said.
“We cannot continue to allow our farmers to be afraid of going back to their farms. We cannot continue to allow insecurity.”

Obi emphasized that insecurity was fast eroding livelihoods, damaging the economy, and threatening the stability of the entire nation.

He said the people of Eha-Amufu deserved more than condolences, they deserved action.

“These communities deserve not only our compassion but also real and immediate security intervention,” Obi added.

“To the people of Eha-Amufu, you are not alone. I offer my heartfelt condolences to your community, and I pray that the souls of the departed rest in peace. May peace and security return to your land.”

Eha-Amufu has in recent years become a flashpoint for violent attacks, with villagers often caught unprotected and without timely government response.

Security analysts have warned that the pattern of helicopter-assisted attacks, as alleged by locals, is a disturbing development that calls for a high-level investigation.

Meanwhile, state authorities have yet to confirm the identities of the attackers or offer official comment on the claim that helicopters were used in the Sunday assault.

Residents remain on edge, fearing more coordinated strikes as farming season approaches.

Local civil society groups have also condemned the killings and joined calls for both the federal and state governments to act swiftly.

Obi’s comments reflect growing public frustration with how security threats in rural areas are handled by security agencies.

Many Nigerians on social media echoed his sentiments, demanding that urgent steps be taken to halt further bloodshed.

As investigations into the attack continue, communities in Enugu and across the Southeast are demanding proactive policing, surveillance, and protection from such violent invasions.

In the wake of the tragedy, voices like Obi’s have added weight to a rising chorus demanding accountability, justice, and sustainable peace in Nigeria’s conflict-ridden regions.
