Ogun State Government warns against Sharia Courts establishment

The Ogun State government firmly cautioned against any efforts to set up a Sharia Court in the region.

In a statement personally signed by Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, it emphasized that individuals or groups lack legal authority to establish Sharia Courts.

This warning came in response to a notice claiming the launch of such a court within the state.

According to the statement, Ogun State recognizes only courts established under the legal framework of the Nigerian Constitution.

Therefore, Sharia Courts are explicitly excluded.

The statement noted, “We have observed the spread of a digital announcement regarding a Shari’ah Court in Ogun State.”
Furthermore, it clarified, “No Sharia Court holds authorization to function in Ogun State.

The courts permitted to handle disputes are defined by Federal and State laws.”
These legally recognized courts include: Magistrates’ Courts, High Court, Customary Courts, Federal High Court, and Supreme Court, to name a few.

Additionally, the statement stressed, “Currently, no law in Ogun State permits the establishment of a Sharia Court. Sharia law is not part of our legal system.”

Importantly, the Ogun State government recognizes individuals’ rights to practice their religion freely or even choose none at all.

Nevertheless, this right doesn’t allow for forming unauthorized groups or institutions.

No one can create a court without proper legal authorization.
Those behind the notice possess no legal standing and cannot administer justice through mere announcements.

Consequently, the State government required all participants in the unauthorized court to immediately cease activities and dissolve the organization.

Moreover, the government urged the public to report any documents or individuals linked to the illegal Sharia Court immediately.
