The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has flagged off the distribution of emergency relief materials to victims of the recent tanker fire explosion in Enugu State.

Governor Peter Mbah, while receiving NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, and her team in his office on Tuesday, reiterated his call for the enforcement of anti-spill locks on fuel tankers nationwide to prevent similar disasters.

Governor Mbah expressed concern over the frequency of tanker-related accidents, emphasizing that such tragedies could be mitigated with proper safety measures.

He stressed the need for law enforcement agencies, particularly the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), to ensure strict compliance with anti-spill lock regulations.

“Disasters like tanker fires are becoming far too frequent,” Mbah stated.

“With anti-spill locks installed on tankers transporting inflammable products like petrol and automotive gas oil, spills can be avoided even when a tanker falls.

The tragic incident in Enugu occurred because spilled petrol ignited, leading to loss of lives and property.

I urge law enforcement agencies to take this matter seriously.”

The governor commended NEMA for its swift intervention and support following the tanker fire, which claimed several lives and destroyed vehicles and goods at Ugwu Onyeama along the Enugu-Onitsha federal highway.

He disclosed that the state government is fully funding the medical treatment of survivors admitted to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu; University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH); and Enugu State University of Science and Technology Hospital, Park Lane.

“We are committed to ensuring that all survivors receive the best medical care available,” Mbah said.

“The state government is covering all medical bills to ease the burden on the victims and their families.”

Mrs. Umar commiserated with the government and people of Enugu State, praising Governor Mbah for his proactive response to the disaster.

“Your leadership during this crisis has been commendable, particularly your prompt visit to the scene and efforts to ensure maximum medical attention for survivors,” she said.

She announced that NEMA had provided relief materials to assist the affected victims.

The items include 200 25kg bags of rice, 200 cartons of spaghetti, 20 cartons of five-litre vegetable oil, 20 cartons of seasoning, 20 cartons of tomato paste, as well as medical supplies and consumables.

Mrs. Umar also voiced her concern over the rising cases of tanker explosions nationwide, describing them as a significant threat to lives, property, and the environment.

“These incidents are not only devastating but also hinder economic progress and community development.

It is a collective responsibility of all tiers of government to address this issue and provide support to affected populations,” she stated.

Governor Mbah thanked NEMA and President Bola Tinubu for their empathy and prompt support, describing the partnership between the federal and state governments as vital for disaster management.

“We appreciate the federal government’s solidarity and the logistics provided to ensure these relief materials reach those most in need,” he said.

The governor reiterated his commitment to implementing measures that would prevent such tragedies in the future.

NEMA’s DG urged all stakeholders to prioritize safety standards for tankers transporting petroleum products.
