Tragedy struck along the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State on June 29, when a police inspector lost his life following a fatal road accident involving two trucks.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) confirms that the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. near the Judiciary Complex checkpoint, where Inspector Afolabi Adeola was on duty.

According to initial reports, a fully loaded FAW truck carrying 900 bags of cement approached the checkpoint at high speed. The driver, allegedly without exercising necessary caution, rammed into a stationary FAW mini truck that had complied with checkpoint orders.

The violent impact of the collision severely injured Inspector Adeola, who was stationed at the checkpoint during the incident.

Eyewitnesses noted that the collision caused chaos in the area as bystanders scrambled for safety and attempted to rescue the injured officer.

He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Lagos for urgent medical attention, where he underwent X-ray and emergency procedures.

Unfortunately, despite the efforts of medical personnel, Inspector Adeola succumbed to his injuries on Monday, July 1, just two days after the crash.

Traffic authorities promptly arrived at the scene of the crash, where they documented the incident by taking photographs and preparing sketch maps. Both vehicles were recovered from the scene for forensic investigation and evidence collection.

The police have confirmed that the drivers involved in the crash will be arraigned in court on July 3, as part of legal proceedings aimed at ensuring accountability and justice.

The Ogun State Police Command has not released the names of the truck drivers, but a spokesperson confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances leading to the deadly collision.

The incident has reignited public concern about the reckless driving habits of truck drivers, particularly along major highways in Ogun State.

Residents and civil society organizations have also called on the authorities to introduce stricter monitoring and enforcement measures at highway checkpoints to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Inspector Afolabi Adeola is remembered by colleagues as a dedicated officer who diligently carried out his duties until his last moments.

His death adds to the growing list of law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate price while serving on Nigerian roads.
