Opoku-Agyemang: Behold Ghana’s first ever female vice president

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has made history as Ghana’s first female Vice President, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards gender equality and women’s empowerment.

With a distinguished career spanning over three decades, Professor Opoku-Agyemang has established herself as a renowned academic and politician.

Born on November 22, 1951, in Cape Coast, Ghana, she began her academic journey at the University of Ghana, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Romance Languages.

She later pursued her graduate studies at the University of York in the United Kingdom, earning a Master of Arts degree in English Literature.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s academic career took off in 1986 when she joined the University of Cape Coast as a lecturer in the English Department.

She rose through the ranks, becoming a professor in 2002, and later served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast from 2008 to 2012.

In addition to her academic achievements, Professor Opoku-Agyemang has had a successful career in politics.

She served as the Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017, implementing several reforms aimed at improving the quality of education in Ghana.

Her tenure as Minister was marked by significant achievements, including the expansion of the school feeding program, the introduction of a new curriculum, and the establishment of a national education policy.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s commitment to public service extends beyond her roles in academia and politics.

She has served on several boards and committees, including the Ghana National Commission on Culture, the Ghana Education Service Council, and the University of Ghana Council.

She is also a fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

As the first female Vice President of Ghana, Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s achievement is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and perseverance.
