Some electoral officers have been hospitalised after political thugs attacked a polling unit in Osogbo LGA of Osun state during the governorship election.
The attack occurred at polling unit 02 in ward 4 before collation commenced, according to the ward’s collation officer.
The officer reported the incident at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation centre for Osogbo LGA at about 11:25pm.
He said the attack prevented the collation of votes from the affected polling unit.
“Some electoral officers injured during the incident are currently receiving treatment in hospital,” the officer added.
The identities of those responsible for the attack and the extent of the injuries were not immediately known.
The development came hours after Ademola Adeleke, Osun governor, urged President Bola Tinubu to prevent what he described as attempts by “desperate and rejected politicians” to disrupt or hijack collation centres across the state.
Adeleke made the call in a social media post on Saturday as the collation of results from the governorship election got underway.
The governor urged Tinubu to warn the heads of security agencies deployed to the state to protect the electoral process.
“It is imperative that you use your good office to issue a clear warning to the heads of security agencies deployed to protect the good people of Osun State and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process,” Adeleke said.
“Reports of attempts to hijack or disrupt collation centres by desperate and rejected politicians across the state are deeply concerning and unacceptable, particularly given the large number of security personnel deployed to ensure a peaceful and credible election.”
