UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE – Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has unveiled a ₦306 million technology-enabled business grant initiative known as NKATA, aimed at empowering entrepreneurs, boosting innovation, and expanding economic opportunities across the state.
The initiative is designed to support small and medium-scale business owners, particularly young entrepreneurs, tech innovators, and startups seeking financial and digital support to scale their operations in an increasingly competitive economy.
Governor Otti said the programme reflects his administration’s commitment to building a technology-driven economy that encourages innovation, job creation, and sustainable development across Abia State.
Focus On Digital-Driven Entrepreneurship
The NKATA grant scheme is structured to integrate technology into business development, ensuring that beneficiaries are not only given financial assistance but also equipped with digital tools and skills to improve productivity and competitiveness.
Officials explained that the programme will prioritise businesses that demonstrate innovation, scalability, and potential to create employment opportunities within local communities.
The initiative is also expected to support sectors such as information technology, creative industries, agritech, e-commerce, and other digital-based enterprises.
Economic Empowerment Strategy
Governor Otti noted that the ₦306 million intervention is part of a broader economic transformation agenda aimed at repositioning Abia State as a hub for entrepreneurship and innovation in Nigeria.
He emphasized that empowering young people with access to capital and technology is critical to reducing unemployment and stimulating inclusive economic growth.
The governor also stressed that the state government is committed to creating an enabling environment where businesses can thrive without unnecessary bureaucratic barriers.
Support For Startups And SMEs
The programme is expected to benefit both new startups and existing small and medium enterprises that require financial support to expand their operations.
Beneficiaries will reportedly undergo selection processes designed to ensure transparency, accountability, and proper allocation of funds to viable business ideas.
Officials added that mentorship and capacity-building components may also be included to help recipients manage and sustain their businesses effectively.
Driving Innovation Across Abia
Stakeholders in the state’s economic sector have described the NKATA initiative as a strategic move to align Abia’s development with global digital economy trends.
They noted that technology-driven empowerment programmes are essential for creating a modern workforce capable of competing in both local and international markets.
Looking Ahead
As implementation begins, the state government is expected to monitor the impact of the grant scheme closely to ensure it delivers measurable economic benefits.
Analysts say the success of the NKATA programme could position Abia State as a model for tech-based economic empowerment in Nigeria, especially if sustained investment and proper oversight are maintained.
