Over 30,000 trucks, trailers, buses stranded at Jebba axis of River Niger

A traveller en route Ibadan from Kano has lamented that thousands of commuters are stranded at the Jebba axis of River Niger following the overflow of the river banks.

According to the source, over 30,000 trucks, trailers, and luxurious buses are stranded in the horizon as the bridge remains covered with water.

The source, while responding to a message of inquiry, said: “This is very true. Even passing through Niger State now is not passable.

“My customer coming from Kano to Ibadan have been stranded at Niger State now for about a week now.

“His brother communicating with me from Kano said over 30,000 trucks, trailers and luxurious buses are stranded there. No movement at all.”

In another development, a public service announcement issued by relevant authorities in a WhatsApp forum has confirmed that the Lokoja — Abuja route is also grid-locked in Kogi State over the riverbanks overflow.

The announcement reads:

“Announcement! Announcement!! Announcement!!! This is to notify this Forum and the General Public that the Lokoja – Abuja route is presently grid- locked because of the flood situation ravaging the State.

“We hereby advise our road users from the South East going towards the North to use the Benue State axis while those going to Abuja from the South West axis use the Niger State route.

“Those vehicles coming from the northern part of the country to the south are advised to make use of the aforementioned routes respectively.

“Please endeavour to pass this information as quickly as possible to avoid further suffering on the side of unsuspecting Commuters.”

Presently, tens of towns and villages along the River Niger, from Niger State all the way to Rivers State, are submerged under water.

The incidence took place after Cameroonian authorities released waters from the Lado Damn causing heavy flooding along the affected towns and places. Read more.
