IBADAN, OYO STATE — Muslim leaders in Oyo State have emphasized the importance of prayers, unity, and collective action in addressing the growing challenges of banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats affecting communities across the state and the country.
The religious leaders made the call during a gathering in Ibadan, where clerics, Islamic scholars, and community stakeholders came together to offer prayers for peace, security, and stability in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.
Participants expressed concern over the increasing incidents of kidnapping, violent attacks, and other criminal activities, noting that the situation has continued to create fear among residents and disrupt economic and social activities in many communities.
The Muslim leaders stressed that while security agencies have a critical role to play in combating crime, citizens must also contribute by promoting unity, vigilance, and cooperation with law enforcement authorities. They argued that lasting peace can only be achieved when communities work together regardless of ethnic, religious, or political differences.
During the prayer session, special supplications were offered for the safety of residents, the success of security operations, and the safe return of victims of kidnapping and other forms of criminality. The gathering also called for divine intervention in addressing the nation’s security challenges.
The clerics urged Nigerians to reject actions capable of promoting division, hatred, or violence, stressing that national unity remains essential for overcoming the threats posed by criminal elements.
They also appealed to government at all levels to continue strengthening security architecture, improving intelligence gathering, and providing the necessary support and equipment required by security agencies to effectively carry out their responsibilities.
According to the leaders, insecurity affects every segment of society and requires a coordinated response involving government institutions, religious bodies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and citizens.
The gathering further encouraged young people to embrace productive ventures and avoid activities that could expose them to criminal networks, emphasizing the importance of education, moral values, and community engagement in building a safer society.
Stakeholders at the event noted that religious institutions have a significant role in promoting peace and social harmony through teachings that encourage tolerance, mutual respect, and lawful conduct.
The leaders also expressed sympathy for families affected by kidnapping and violent crimes, assuring them of continued prayers and support during their difficult experiences.
As concerns over insecurity continue to dominate public discourse, the Muslim leaders reiterated their commitment to working with other faith groups and community organisations to promote peace-building initiatives and strengthen social cohesion across Oyo State.
