(DDM) – Ozolua Grammar School, Ologbo, Edo State, has been declared the winner of a regional robotics contest after completing an intensive 16-week STEM training programme.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the competition took place in Effurun, Delta State, and featured participation from schools across Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers States.
The contest provided a platform for students to demonstrate innovation, problem-solving skills, and technical competence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Themed “Robotics for a Sustainable and Inclusive Skilled Economy,” the competition was supported by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and facilitated by several prominent technology foundations dedicated to promoting STEM education in Nigeria.
The event attracted hundreds of students, teachers, and educational stakeholders who witnessed practical demonstrations of robots designed to solve real-world problems.
Dr. Elizabeth Eterigho, a STEM education advocate and one of the judges, commended Ozolua Grammar School for its creativity, technical precision, and teamwork.
She emphasised that such initiatives are critical for equipping young Nigerians with skills needed for the 21st-century workforce.
“Robotics challenges like this nurture innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among students, preparing them to meet future technological demands,” Dr. Eterigho said.
Delta State’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, praised the organisers and participants, pledging continued government support for future editions of the contest.
She highlighted that such competitions not only advance STEM education but also promote regional collaboration and the sharing of best practices among schools.
“Investing in young minds through practical STEM initiatives ensures that our students are future-ready and globally competitive,” Mrs. Ezewu stated.
In the final ranking, Iwere Secondary School claimed second place, while Nana Model College secured third position.
Participants showcased projects ranging from automated robotic arms to intelligent navigation systems, impressing both judges and spectators with their creativity and technical proficiency.
The organisers noted that the 16-week preparation involved rigorous mentorship sessions, hands-on workshops, and collaborative problem-solving exercises designed to deepen students’ understanding of robotics and engineering principles.
Students also received guidance on coding, circuitry, and robotics design, reinforcing the practical application of classroom theory.
Stakeholders at the event, including educators, parents, and technology experts, called for more investment in STEM education across the region.
They stressed that competitions like these foster not only academic excellence but also innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic development.
Ozolua Grammar School’s victory is expected to inspire other schools to participate in future robotics challenges, contributing to a growing culture of STEM excellence in Edo, Delta, and neighbouring states.
