Paul Scholes, one of the greatest midfielders in football history, once shared a humbling story from his early days at Manchester Unite.

This story offers a glimpse into the challenges young players face on their journey to greatness. It involves Andrei Kanchelskis, a talented Russian winger who had recently joined the club.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Scholes recalled a training session when he was just 17 years old.

During this session, he was assigned to play in the unfamiliar position of left-back and tasked with marking Kanchelskis.

At the time, Kanchelskis was at the peak of his abilities, known for his incredible speed, sharp dribbling, and ability to outclass defenders.

For the young Scholes, this experience quickly turned into a nightmare.

He admitted that he struggled to match Kanchelskis’s pace and agility.

No matter how hard he tried, he was repeatedly outplayed, left trailing in the winger’s wake.

The experience was so overwhelming that Scholes vowed never to play as a left-back again.

Despite the humiliation, Scholes later viewed the encounter as a turning point in his development.

It taught him to appreciate the challenges of playing in different positions and to develop resilience in the face of setbacks.

The lesson shaped him into a versatile and determined player who went on to master the midfield role.

Interestingly, the rough start did not sour his relationship with Kanchelskis.

The two played together in 10 matches for Manchester United, recording six wins, two losses, and two draws.

Scholes credited Kanchelskis’s presence for pushing him to work harder and improve his game.

Over time, Scholes became one of Manchester United’s most vital players.

He won 11 Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies, and several domestic cups, cementing his place among football’s all-time greats.

This story serves as a reminder that even the best players face tough challenges early in their careers.

It highlights the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and learning from setbacks.

Through these qualities, Scholes turned a difficult experience into a stepping stone for greatness.
