PDP Factional Chairman Turaki Appeals Court Arrest Order

(DDM) – A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Abuja has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Tanimu Turaki, over his failure to appear for arraignment in a criminal case instituted by the police.

The court order was issued on Thursday after the judge noted that Turaki failed to honour multiple summons requiring his appearance before the court for arraignment on charges brought forward by the Nigeria Police Force.

The prosecution informed the court that the defendant had been duly served with the charges and had been repeatedly notified of the scheduled arraignment dates but did not appear.

Based on this, the court granted the prosecution’s application for a bench warrant to compel his arrest and ensure his appearance in court.

The warrant authorises security agencies to arrest Turaki and produce him before the court to answer to the criminal allegations filed against him.

Court officials stated that the decision was necessary to prevent delays in the administration of justice and to ensure that court processes are not undermined by absence of defendants.

The criminal case reportedly involves allegations filed by the police, although full details of the charges were not immediately disclosed during the proceedings.

Legal analysts note that bench warrants are typically issued when a defendant deliberately or repeatedly fails to appear in court without lawful justification.

They explained that such orders are standard judicial tools used to enforce compliance with criminal proceedings and maintain the authority of the court.

Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has been a prominent figure in political and legal circles and is currently associated with a factional leadership structure within the PDP.

The Peoples Democratic Party has recently experienced internal disputes over leadership positions, contributing to competing claims within the party hierarchy.

Observers say the latest court development could further intensify political tensions within the opposition party as it continues to navigate internal divisions.

Security agencies are expected to enforce the court order in line with legal procedures once administrative processes are completed.

Meanwhile, the court adjourned further proceedings pending the arrest and appearance of the defendant before the bench.

Legal experts emphasise that failure to respond to court summons can lead to compulsory appearance measures, including arrest warrants and possible additional charges.

The case adds to ongoing discussions about political accountability and adherence to judicial processes among high-profile figures in Nigeria.

Further hearings are expected once Turaki is apprehended and brought before the court to enter his plea.
