Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has said his personal investigation in Peru found no evidence supporting allegations linking former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to drug trafficking.
Omokri disclosed this in a statement shared on X on Wednesday while responding to claims previously made by former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo.
According to him, he travelled to Peru in 2022 to verify allegations that Obi sponsored a female drug courier who was later arrested and allegedly implicated him during trial proceedings.
Omokri said the investigation was part of a wider effort to independently verify politically sensitive claims, recalling that he had earlier travelled to the United States to investigate the academic records of President Bola Tinubu at Chicago State University.
He explained that despite the political implications at the time, he publicly released documents and videos confirming Tinubu attended and graduated from the institution.
After completing the US trip, Omokri said he proceeded to Peru to examine claims surrounding Obi.
According to him, the investigation involved visits to a women’s prison in Lima as well as meetings with local authorities in the South American country.
He maintained that his findings showed the allegation against Obi was false.
“I went to the women’s prison in Lima, Peru, with a witness who is still alive and a video camera,” Omokri stated.
He added that after verifying the facts, he contacted Dokubo and advised him to stop repeating the accusation because there was no evidence supporting it.
According to Omokri, Dokubo agreed with his position at the time.
The ambassador-designate also urged political actors ahead of the 2027 elections to avoid reviving claims he said had already been investigated and disproved.
“As we approach the 2027 election, please can we all refrain from recycling these allegations, which I have already debunked,” he said.
Omokri stressed that he funded the investigations personally and was motivated by what he described as patriotism and a commitment to justice.
He said it was disappointing to see the allegations resurface despite what he insists were thorough findings clearing Obi of wrongdoing.
The statement has renewed attention around politically charged claims and counterclaims likely to shape debates ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
