Peter Obi calls for prayers as catholic church begins pope selection

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has reacted to the Catholic Church’s move to elect a new Pope.
The ex-Governor of Anambra State made the call on his verified X handle early Tuesday morning.
Obi urged Nigerian Catholics to pray for God’s direction during the sacred process of choosing a new pontiff.
He described the moment as a spiritual responsibility that demands collective prayers and divine guidance from all believers.
Obi said the Cardinals need God’s help as they begin the selection process at the Vatican today.
“As Christians and Catholics, we join our hearts in earnest prayer with all people of goodwill,” Obi posted.
He added that the conclave was a sacred duty that required wisdom, grace, and divine intervention.
“May God, in His infinite wisdom, guide the Cardinals in their sacred duty,” he wrote.
He further prayed for the emergence of a Pope committed to humility, compassion and service to humanity.
“We pray the Cardinals are granted divine insight to choose a leader filled with compassion and humility,” Obi added.
He said the Church needs a Pope who will lead with grace and moral strength in today’s troubled world.
“May this process be filled with grace, and the outcome reflect God’s will,” the former governor concluded.
The message, signed “— PO,” quickly went viral among his supporters and Catholic faithful across Nigeria.
Many social media users praised Obi’s statement for its depth, humility and moral sensitivity.
Some called the post “timely” while others described it as “a true example of spiritual leadership.”
One user wrote, “Obi speaks not just as a politician, but as a man of conscience.”
Another added, “This is the type of leadership we need — one that puts God and humanity first.”
The Catholic community in Nigeria also reacted warmly to the message, with many echoing Obi’s sentiments.
A priest in Lagos said the Church needs voices like Obi’s during major global events like this.
Several Nigerians said they hoped the next Pope would promote peace, unity, and service worldwide.
They urged the Cardinals to listen to the Holy Spirit and choose a shepherd who reflects Christ’s teachings.
The conclave is expected to last a few days, with global attention focused on its outcome.
