Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate under the Labor Party, has congratulated Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for fulfilling the long-standing promise of revamping the old Port Harcourt refinery.

As gathered by the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), ­Obi’s post on his X formerly Twitter page on Wednesday, read “I wish to congratulate the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for fulfilling the long-standing promise of revamping the old Port Harcourt refinery.”

“The refinery, which comes on stream today, boasts an installed production capacity of 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Approximately 200 trucks are expected to load products daily from the refinery.”

“Nigerians now await the corresponding impact and benefits on pump prices and the overall economy.”

“Additionally, news of the Kaduna refinery’s revival is promising, as it is expected to boost productivity, improve transportation, and alleviate economic burdens across the country.”

“While we acknowledge these achievements as a step in the right direction, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of transparency in the operations of the NNPC.”

“Nigerians deserve clarity and accountability regarding the management of the nation’s vital oil resources, ensuring that the benefits of increased refining capacity reach every Nigerian and that the gains are used to support long-term development.”

“A new Nigeria is POssible,” the post concluded.

Peter Obi is a Nigerian politician and businessman who served as the Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014.

He was born on July 19, 1961, in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria.

The New Port Harcourt Refinery, also known as Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited (PHRC), is a Nigerian oil and gas company that specializes in refining crude oil into petroleum products.

It is located at Alesa Eleme, near Port Harcourt, and has a complex configuration, with two plants: the old refinery, which was commissioned in 1965, and the new refinery, which started operations in 1989.

Refinery Capacity and Operations

The old refinery has a capacity of 60,000 barrels per stream day, while the new refinery can process 150,000 barrels per stream day.

The combined capacity of both refineries is 210,000 barrels per stream day. However, due to inefficient processes and lack of maintenance, the refinery has only utilized a fraction of its capacity in recent decades.

The refinery produces various petroleum products, including Petrol, Diesel, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Paraffin for aircraft and households, Low-viscosity fuel oil (LPFO), and High-viscosity fuel oil (HPFO).

In March 2021, the Nigerian government approved a £1.08 billion expenditure for the refurbishment and modernization of the refinery complex.

The Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited is a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The company is headed by Managing Director Ahmed Dikko, along with Executive Directors Babatunde Sofowora and Reginald Udeh.
