(DDM) – Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to Archbishop Charles Heerey College of Health Sciences and Technology, Nkpor (ACHCOHSTEN), in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the donation was made to support ongoing infrastructural projects at the institution, which has played a vital role in training health professionals within the region.
Obi, who is widely known for his consistent advocacy for investment in education and human capital development, presented the donation during a recent visit to the college.
He stated that his action was driven by a long-held belief that no nation can rise beyond the quality of its human resources.
He stressed that building world-class health institutions must start with proper infrastructure, well-equipped laboratories, and modern teaching facilities.
He called on political leaders, private organizations, and individuals to prioritize support for educational institutions, particularly in areas like healthcare where demand for skilled professionals remains high.
Archbishop Charles Heerey College of Health Sciences and Technology, which has continued to expand its capacity since its establishment, remains one of the leading missionary health institutions in the South-East.
Named after the late Archbishop Charles Heerey, a Catholic missionary renowned for his contributions to education and social development in Eastern Nigeria, the institution has trained thousands of healthcare practitioners over the years.
Management of the college praised Obi for his timely support and pledged that the funds would be directed toward the construction and renovation of key infrastructure, including laboratories, classrooms, and hostel facilities for students.
Students of the college expressed joy over the gesture, with some stating that such support would go a long way in improving the quality of their training and preparing them for global medical standards.
Peter Obi’s philanthropic interventions in education and healthcare are well documented.
Since leaving office as Anambra State Governor in 2014, he has donated hundreds of millions of naira to hospitals, missionary schools, and orphanages across Nigeria.
In recent years, he has visited institutions in Anambra, Enugu, Abia, Lagos, Plateau, and even northern states, where he provided financial assistance and materials to schools and hospitals struggling with inadequate funding.
His consistent message has been that leaders should invest in projects that have a lasting impact on society rather than spend public funds on luxury and political celebrations.
Analysts have often linked his political philosophy to his background as a businessman and advocate for efficient resource management.
Many believe his approach could inspire other Nigerian leaders to redirect resources toward improving education and healthcare, two critical sectors that have suffered decades of neglect.
Archbishop Charles Heerey College has long faced infrastructural challenges due to the rising number of students seeking admission amid limited facilities.
Experts say Obi’s intervention could set a precedent for more high-profile alumni and prominent Nigerians to support educational development projects.
The Catholic community in Anambra also welcomed the gesture, describing it as a testament to Obi’s commitment to social development and humanitarian service.
Priests and administrators of missionary schools noted that such contributions help maintain the legacy of Catholic education, which has produced some of Nigeria’s finest professionals in medicine, engineering, and public service.
Political observers noted that Obi’s donation would further strengthen his image as a leader deeply invested in grassroots development, especially at a time when Nigeria is grappling with a shortage of qualified health personnel.
According to the World Health Organization, Nigeria requires a significant increase in health workers to meet global standards for patient-to-doctor ratios.
Donations like Obi’s, experts say, help build institutions that can fill the gap by producing more skilled professionals for local and international healthcare systems.
The gesture has also sparked debate on social media, with many Nigerians urging political officeholders and wealthy individuals to emulate such philanthropic acts rather than waiting for government interventions that may take years to materialize.
As Anambra continues to face challenges in expanding access to quality health education, stakeholders believe Obi’s contribution represents a practical step toward long-term solutions.
Observers note that the college could become a major training hub for healthcare professionals if such investments continue.
With Nigeria battling brain drain, where thousands of nurses and doctors leave annually for better opportunities abroad, strengthening local training facilities is seen as a critical step in safeguarding the country’s future healthcare system.
For now, students and staff at Archbishop Charles Heerey College say they are hopeful that this donation will mark the beginning of a new chapter for the institution and inspire further investments in its growth.
