Peter Obi Suspends Public Activities Over Health Concerns

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced a temporary withdrawal from public engagements.

Obi disclosed this in a statement shared on his official X handle on Saturday, September 6.

According to him, doctors prescribed medication and recommended a brief period of rest.

The decision, he explained, followed medical advice after he began feeling unwell during an event in Enugu.

“Earlier in Enugu, I was not feeling well. I visited the hospital where the doctor gave me some medication and advised me to take a day or two days’ rest. In obedience to the doctor’s advice, I will not be able to meet up with all my scheduled engagements within and outside the country this weekend,” Obi wrote.

The former presidential candidate apologised for any inconvenience caused by his absence.

He also appealed for public understanding and patience while he followed the medical directive.

Before announcing the health-related break, Obi highlighted some of his recent public activities.

He attended a tourism event in Enugu, where he delivered a speech on the potential of the industry.

He also donated ₦10 million to the Aguata Diocese of the Church of Nigeria.

The donation is to support the acquisition and revitalisation of Good Hope Specialist Hospital, Isulo, in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Obi praised the Diocese’s initiative to transform the hospital into a full-scale health complex.

The plan includes the establishment of a School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Technology.

He emphasised that healthcare remains one of the most meaningful investments for Nigeria’s future.

“Faith-based organisations have shown, time and again, that with the right support, they can deliver excellence,” he noted.

From Isulo, Obi travelled to Owerri, Imo State, where he attended a dinner organised by Barrister Nnaemeka Maduagwu in honour of former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

Despite his short break, Obi assured his supporters that his commitment to improving Nigeria’s healthcare system and supporting charitable projects remains strong.

He stressed the importance of building what he described as “a healthier Nigeria,” adding that faith-based health initiatives deserve more attention and support.

His brief withdrawal has sparked reactions among his followers and political observers, with many sending him wishes for quick recovery.

For Obi, the decision underlines the balance between public service and personal health, a theme he has often discussed in his political journey.
