PHOTOS: Patients Stranded as Lagos Doctors Begin Strike

Patients and their families faced serious disruptions at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Monday, July 28, 2025.
Diaspora Digital Media reported that the Medical doctors under the Lagos State Government began a three-day warning strike over salary disputes.
The Medical Guild, representing these doctors, initiated the strike at 8:00 a.m. They cited illegal and disrespectful deductions made by the Lagos State Treasury Office as the reason for their action.
Guild Chairman Faults Government Actions
At a press conference held last Saturday, the Guild’s Chairman, Dr. Japhet Olugbogi, traced the issue back to April 2025.
He said the government unilaterally slashed doctors’ salaries without any consultation.
Although the Guild pushed for a reversal and succeeded initially the Treasury Office made new deductions in July. This action, Olugbogi said, broke an agreement between the Guild and the state government.
“Our members were angry,” Olugbogi stated. “While many wanted to strike immediately, we chose to pursue peaceful engagement first.”
Conciliation Efforts Fail
Despite forming a six-member conciliation committee, the Guild accused the government of negotiating in bad faith.
The failure of talks forced the doctors to begin the strike.
The warning strike started on July 28 and is set to end at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 31.
Patients Suffer as Services Halt
The strike disrupted medical services at LASUTH. Many patients and their relatives, unaware of the situation, arrived for appointments only to find no doctors available.
Several family members expressed frustration. They called on the government to act quickly and meet the doctors’ demands to prevent a full-blown strike.
The Medical Guild stressed that it remains open to genuine dialogue. However, it insists the government must correct the salary irregularities to avoid future disruptions.
