England appoints Lee Carlsey as Interim Head Coach
The Football Association in England has announced the appointment of Lee Carsley as England’s interim head coach.
Carsley, who has been leading the England Under-21 team, will take the reins of the senior squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
The 49-year-old Carsley, a former Everton and Blackburn Rovers midfielder, has been praised for his work with the Under-21 team, guiding them to a European Championship title last year.
Carsley’s appointment comes after Gareth Southgate stepped down as England manager following the Euro 2024 final.
The FA is still searching for a permanent replacement, but Carsley’s interim role will provide stability and continuity for the team ahead of the Nations League campaign.
“Lee Carsley is an exceptional coach and leader, and we are confident he will do an excellent job as interim head coach,” said FA CEO Mark Bullingham. “His experience and success with the Under-21 team make him the ideal candidate to lead the senior team during this period.”
Carsley will be assisted by his Under-21 coaching staff, including Ashley Cole and Michael Dawson.
His first match in charge will be against the Republic of Ireland on September 7, followed by a trip to Finland on September 10.
“I’m honored to be given this opportunity to lead the senior team,” said Carsley. “I’m looking forward to working with the players and staff to achieve success in the Nations League.”
Former England captain Alan Shearer praised the appointment, saying: “Lee Carsley is a top coach and a great choice for the interim role. He knows the players and the system, and I’m confident he’ll do a great job.”
The news has been met with positivity from fans and pundits alike, with many welcoming the appointment of a coach with a proven track record of success.
