Pogba returns to Manchester United for a record €105m
Paul Pogba is set to return to Manchester United for a world record fee – a whopping €105m.
The 23-year-old sealed a sensational return to United with a great deal more global acclaim than when he left.
Man United spent €105m on the former Juventus midfielder – potentially rising to €110m – prising him away from Turin.
Pogba, signing a five-year deal, joins an impressive array of signings instigated by Jose Mourinho.
He is arriving alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly.
Hear him: “I feel the time is right to go back to Old Trafford”.
“I always enjoyed playing in front of the fans and can’t wait to make my contribution to the team.
“This is the right club for me to achieve everything I hope to in the game.”
Still only 23 years old, the Frenchman is ranked by many as one of the best in the world in his position.
Among most other onlookers he is seen to be well on his way to that accolade.
There’s no doubt that Red Devils boss Mourinho rates him highly.
“Paul is one of the best players in the world and will be a key part of the United team I want to build here for the future,” the Portuguese tactician said on sealing the always-impressively coiffured midfielder.
“He is quick, strong, scores goals and reads the game better than many players much older than he is.”
Full of energy, his rangy stride and confidence on the ball lit up the FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013.
There his commanding displays wearing the captain’s armband not only saw him depart with a winners’ medal, but also the Adidas Golden Ball for best player.
The striker moved to Italy from United the previous year.
Then, it was clear by that point, having already been an impressive regular in the preceding Serie A season, that the title-winning Juventus had a diamond in their midst.
Another Scudetto followed a year later for Pogba, as well as more superlatives, before heading to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil as part of a France side seen as dark horses.
Again he impressed on the international stage, with touch and vision that caught the eye, and composure that belied his tender years.
His only goal of the tournament helping send Les Bleus past Nigeria and into the quarter-finals, but he was a driving force throughout for Didier Deschamps’ side.
Their tournament ended in the last eight against eventual champions Germany.
The Paris-born starlet, however, left South America clutching the Hyundai Young Player Award.
While back-to-back domestic doubles came at Juventus, there was heartbreak in two European finals for him.
Firstly in the 2015 UEFA Champions League against Barcelona, before losing out on home soil in the climax of UEFA EURO 2016 which will see him arrive in England battle-hardened, as well as bolstered by domestic and individual success.
Having clocked up less than 100 minutes in his first spell, he will be thrust into a talismanic role in the centre of a United side that has underperformed by the high standards of supporters since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson as manager.
Now he will be looked upon to help bring glory to Old Trafford in this new Mourinho era and end their wait for a 21st league title.
