Nigeria Police Force has been accused of disrupting the ongoing protest by the retired Police Officers.
Police officers from the Force Headquarters were captured on camera disrupting the ongoing protest by their retired colleagues over pension injustice.
The officers made efforts to frustrate the protest led by publisher, Omoyele Sowore on Monday, July 21, 2025.
According to a report, while the protesters chanted various solidarity songs, a female police officer was captured alongside her serving colleagues pushing members of the protesting group.
“Chanting “Pay police a living wage and proper pensions,” and “freedom cometh by struggle”, the protesters carried placards showing their demands for both serving and retired police officers.
“One of the placards read #Police Protest”, “Decent Salaries Now,” “End Police Slavery,” “Pensions for Police Officers,” and “Dignity for Those in Uniform.”
Politics Nigeria gathered that protesters led by Sowore were prevented from accessing the Force Headquarters.
The Nigeria Police Force has assured retired police officers of security and support as they stage a peaceful protest over pension concerns on Monday, July 21, 2025.
Contrary to disrupting the protest, the police have pledged to protect the rights and dignity of the retired officers.
Retired police officers have been expressing frustration over discriminatory pension schemes, which they claim have pushed them to the wall.
The officers have been seeking government intervention to address their pension concerns .
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed all state Commissioners of Police to ensure the peaceful conduct of the protest and provide security for the retired officers.
The police have cautioned against politicizing the protest, emphasizing their commitment to the welfare of retired personnel.
The police have reaffirmed their support for peaceful protests, outlining a strategy to address pension reform and explore alternative solutions to supplement pension benefits.
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has urged retired officers to ditch the protest and return to talks, describing the planned protest as “ill-advised” and “diversionary”.
The PSC chairman has condemned the poor and discriminatory pension scheme for some categories of retired officers .
The police have made security arrangements to ensure the protest is peaceful and orderly.
The protest is expected to take place primarily in the Federal Capital Territory and other state commands where proper notification has been issued.
