UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a social media activist, Akaninyene Udo, popularly known as “AK Philo,” over allegations of circulating false security alerts that reportedly caused panic among residents in parts of the state.
According to the police, the suspect was taken into custody following investigations into reports that misleading security information was disseminated through social media platforms, triggering fear and confusion, particularly in Eket and surrounding communities.
Authorities alleged that the activist published and shared unverified reports suggesting imminent security threats in the area. The police said the claims generated public anxiety and led to concerns among residents who believed the warnings to be genuine.
Security officials emphasized that the dissemination of false information relating to public safety can have serious consequences, including unnecessary panic, disruption of economic activities, and diversion of security resources from genuine emergencies.
The command stated that preliminary investigations indicated the security alerts circulated by the suspect were not supported by verified intelligence or official reports. Police authorities said efforts are ongoing to determine the full extent of the information shared and its impact on public order.
The arrest comes amid increasing concerns over the spread of misinformation on digital platforms, particularly regarding security matters. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly urged citizens to verify information through credible and official sources before sharing it online.
Police officials stressed that while citizens have the right to express their views and discuss public issues, individuals must exercise responsibility when publishing information capable of affecting public safety and security.
The command also appealed to residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, assuring them that security agencies remain vigilant and committed to protecting lives and property across the state.
Community leaders and stakeholders have welcomed efforts to curb the spread of false security information, noting that misinformation can undermine public confidence and complicate the work of security agencies.
Meanwhile, the police said the suspect would be subjected to due legal processes as investigations continue. Authorities added that anyone found deliberately spreading false information capable of causing public disorder could face prosecution under relevant laws.
The command further encouraged residents to report suspicious activities through official security channels rather than relying on unverified social media posts. It reiterated the importance of public cooperation in maintaining peace and security across Akwa Ibom State.
As investigations progress, the police have assured the public that they will continue monitoring misinformation-related threats while promoting responsible use of social media platforms in the interest of public safety.
