BENIN CITY, Nigeria — Security operatives have arrested four suspected cultists believed to be members of the Aiye Confraternity during a coordinated operation in Edo State, recovering dangerous weapons and other items allegedly linked to criminal activities.
According to the police, the suspects were apprehended during a targeted raid carried out following credible intelligence on the activities of suspected cult groups operating within parts of the state. The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat cult-related violence and improve public safety.
Items recovered from the suspects reportedly include dangerous weapons believed to have been used in criminal operations. Police authorities said the exhibits have been taken into custody as investigations continue to determine the extent of the suspects’ involvement in cult-related crimes and other unlawful activities.
The command stated that preliminary investigations indicate the suspects are alleged members of the Aiye Confraternity, a group frequently linked to violent clashes, intimidation and other criminal offences in some parts of the country. Investigators are also working to identify and apprehend other members of the network who may still be at large.
Police officials reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal gangs and cult groups threatening peace and security across Edo State. They warned that anyone involved in cultism or related criminal activities would be identified and brought to justice.
The command urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing crime and facilitating the arrest of criminal suspects. It assured members of the public that all information provided would be treated confidentially.
Authorities also advised young people to avoid joining cult groups, warning that involvement in such organizations often leads to violence, loss of lives and prosecution under the law.
The four suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations. Meanwhile, security operations have been intensified across the state to prevent further cult-related activities and maintain law and order.
