A dramatic incident unfolded at a First City Monument Bank (FCMB) branch in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, where a man was caught hiding overnight in the bank’s toilet in an attempt to hack into its computer systems.

The suspect entered the bank during business hours on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, posing as a regular customer.

He then sneaked into the restroom, locked himself in, and climbed into the ceiling space, where he stayed hidden until after the bank closed for the day.

After staff had left, the intruder descended from the ceiling and attempted to tamper with the bank’s systems.

However, his efforts were thwarted when the system displayed a message reading “Restarting. Click OK to accept” upon being accessed.

The next morning, staff discovered the restroom door was locked from the inside.

After forcing it open, they found the man hiding in the ceiling.

Security personnel were called, and the suspect was apprehended.

A video circulating on social media shows the suspect being ordered down from the ceiling and subsequently restrained with rope by security operatives.

The incident has sparked concerns about the safety and security of funds kept in banks across Nigeria.

Nigerians are questioning the integrity of bank security protocols and demanding answers on the measures being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future .

The police have launched a thorough investigation into the incident, including the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s apprehension and the potential vulnerabilities in the bank’s security systems.

As of July 4, 2025, FCMB has not issued an official statement addressing the incident or outlining the measures being taken to enhance security and protect customer funds .

Implementing advanced surveillance systems to monitor bank premises and detect suspicious activity.

Conducting regular security audits to identify vulnerabilities and address potential weaknesses.

Developing and enforcing strict protocols for accessing and managing sensitive areas within the bank.

Another report from a reputable media platform states: “A disturbing security breach unfolded at the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) branch on Secretariat Road, Owerri, Imo State, after a suspected hacker reportedly hid inside the bank’s ceiling overnight to access its computer systems.

Reports and viral videos show the unidentified man entering the bank during business hours on Tuesday, pretending to be a customer.

He locked himself in the restroom, climbed into the ceiling, and stayed hidden until after closing time.

Bank staff discovered the breach the next morning when they found the main entrance locked from the inside.

Breaking in, they caught the suspect trying to interfere with the bank’s computers.

Some screens displayed suspicious messages, including prompts like, “Restarting. Click OK to accept.”

The man was forcibly removed from the ceiling by security personnel, and footage of the incident shows a violent response — security officers, including police, kicking and stomping on the suspect while he lay on the ground.

The brutal treatment sparked widespread condemnation on social media.

One user, @Rarebred, criticized the police’s behavior:

“Why are Nigerian police officers unprofessional? Beating the suspect, stomping on his head and chest. He might suffer fatal injuries before any investigation!”, DDM News gathered.
