Thirteen criminal suspects escaped from a police detention facility in Nasarawa State in the early hours of June 14, 2025.
The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. at the Area Command headquarters, where the suspects were held under the custody of the Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Cultism units.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the escape involved suspects facing serious charges, including kidnapping, culpable homicide, grievous harm, and theft.
According to police sources, the detainees broke through the rear wall of their holding cell and fled before officers on duty could intervene.
The escapees include Jamilu Abdulsalam, who faces charges of chain theft and kidnapping.
Others on the run include Abdullahi Yahaya, Usman Yerima, Abba Musa, and Idris Hussaini, all accused of kidnapping, chain theft, and culpable homicide.
Also among the fugitives are Abu Amu and Hussaini Sani, both charged with chain theft and kidnapping.
Usman Hassan was detained for chain theft, intimidation, and attempted kidnapping, while Ibrahim Shuaibu and Hamza Abubakar face multiple charges, including culpable homicide.
Another suspect, Usman Ibrahim, also known as Tecno, is accused of grievous hurt, chain theft, and membership in an unlawful society.
The final suspect, Abdullahi Muhammed, was detained under a court order and also escaped.
Police have launched a manhunt to recapture all thirteen fugitives and return them to custody.
Security agencies across the state and neighboring regions are on high alert for the escaped individuals.
The Cell Record Officer, the incident duty officer, the designated cell guard, and the visiting-round officer have all been placed under investigation.
Sources confirmed that authorities have queried the officers for alleged negligence and possible complicity in the escape.
A senior police official, who spoke anonymously, said preliminary findings suggest the escape was premeditated and enabled by lapses in routine security checks.
Authorities suspect either insider involvement or infrastructure failure at the facility.
Police are reviewing security protocols at the Area Command and other detention centers across Nasarawa State.
Human rights activists have called for a transparent inquiry and reform of detention management practices.
They warned that the escapees could regroup and threaten public safety across Nasarawa and beyond.
Residents have expressed anxiety and urged the police to act swiftly to avoid further incidents.
Community leaders have been asked to report unfamiliar individuals or suspicious activity.
The Nasarawa State Police Command is expected to provide public updates as investigations and search operations continue.
This escape adds to growing concerns over insecurity and overcrowding in Nigeria’s police cells and correctional facilities.
Civil society groups have repeatedly raised alarms over weak detention infrastructure and the ease of escape.
Nigeria has witnessed several jailbreaks and police cell breaks in recent years, exposing systemic weaknesses in its criminal justice system.
Security experts recommend investments in surveillance, reinforced cell structures, and electronic monitoring to prevent future incidents.
DDM made efforts to reach police spokespersons for further comments, but they were unavailable as of press time.
More details are expected to emerge as investigations deepen and arrests follow.
