Benue, Nigeria – A police constable serving in Benue State has been arrested after security agents intercepted a suspicious package containing illegal items reportedly destined for a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member at the orientation camp in Jos, Plateau State.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the interception occurred following a security alert at a motor park on Friday, June 21, 2025, around 2:30 p.m.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, a yet-to-be-identified young man brought two sacks to the motor park for transportation.
The sacks reportedly contained tubers of yam, a locally fabricated pistol, suspected Indian hemp, and gunpowder.
The items were allegedly intended for delivery to an individual identified as Gedor, who is said to be a corps member at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Jos.
Upon realizing the package had raised suspicion, the sender reportedly reached out to his associate, Police Constable Ageli George, who is attached to the X-Squad unit of the Nigerian Police Force in Makurdi, Benue State.
The source claimed that the constable was called in to help clear the consignment and ensure its successful dispatch. However, by the time the constable arrived at the park, the original sender had already fled the area to evade arrest.
Police personnel at the scene apprehended the constable and recovered the suspicious items, including the firearm and narcotics. The suspect is currently in custody as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) begins a thorough investigation into the matter.
Authorities are still searching for the fleeing suspect. Efforts to trace and arrest the intended recipient, Gedor, are also underway.
The police have yet to release an official statement, but preliminary findings suggest a growing trend of attempted smuggling of arms and illicit substances into secure institutions, including NYSC camps.
The arrest has sparked concerns over the infiltration of criminal elements into sensitive national institutions and the role of compromised security personnel in aiding such activities.
