A police inspector in Benin City, Edo State, was killed on Friday after armed individuals in an unregistered, tinted black Lexus SUV opened fire during a routine stop-and-search operation at a checkpoint in Ekiadolor.
The officers had signaled the vehicle to stop, but it ignored the order, raising suspicions.
According to Police Public Relations Officer CPS Moses Yamu, the attackers shot the inspector at close range and fled.
The Edo State Police Command has launched a full investigation, mobilizing intelligence units and operational teams to track down the suspects.
“This heinous act will not go unpunished,” Yamu said, urging residents to cooperate with security agencies, especially during the festive season, to maintain safety.
The command vowed to ensure justice for the slain officer
