Police officer commits suicide in Niger State

Shafi’u Bawa, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the 61 Police Mobile Force (PMF), in Niger State, Northern Nigeria, has reportedly taken his own life.

According to sources, the lifeless body of the officer was discovered hanging from the ceiling of his room on Saturday.

The incident was first reported by his father, Mallam Usman Bawa, who raised the alarm and notified the Kontagora police division.

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun.

In a statement made available to Diaspora Digital Media, Abiodun revealed that the deceased, ASP Shafi’u Bawa, committed suicide by hanging himself, though the motive behind his actions remains unclear.

“On 8/2/2025 at about 2:00 PM, it was reported that one ASP Shafi’u Bawa of 61 PMF, Kontagora, committed suicide by hanging himself on the ceiling due to a yet-to-be-ascertained reason,” Abiodun stated.

“The body was removed and released to the family for burial. The incident is under investigation to ascertain the reason for such action.”

The police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including any potential personal or professional issues that may have contributed to his decision.

The late officer has been laid to rest according to Islamic rites. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
