Security operatives on Tuesday sealed off the venue for a planned meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, preventing party members from accessing the location.
DDM gathered that the event, scheduled to take place at an event centre along Marian Road, was meant to inaugurate the party’s membership registration, mobilisation and revalidation committee ahead of upcoming party primaries.
According to sources within the party, the committee is headed by Eko Alobo and was expected to be inaugurated at about 10:00 a.m.
However, by around 7:00 a.m., a team of mobile police officers had already cordoned off the venue, barring party members and organisers from entering the premises.
A source familiar with the situation said the officers were acting on instructions following a petition reportedly filed by some members of the party.
Efforts to resolve the situation proved unsuccessful despite a meeting between top ADC officials and the state Commissioner of Police.
Among those involved in the discussions were the party’s South-South Zonal Vice Chairman Usani Uguru Usani and Bassey Eko Ewa.
Following the standoff, party leaders relocated the inauguration ceremony to the residence of Usani Usani, where supporters and members later gathered to continue the event.
