Pope Leo XIV has raised fresh concerns over the growing dominance of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential dangers, warning global leaders to ensure the technology remains a tool for human development rather than a replacement for human purpose.
The pontiff made this declaration at a high-level event held in Vatican City as part of the Roman Catholic Jubilee, attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and lawmakers from 68 countries.
“In particular, it must not be forgotten that artificial intelligence functions as a tool for the good of human beings — not to diminish them or even to replace them,” Pope Leo stated.
The Pope, who hails from the United States and ascended the papacy in May, has repeatedly sounded the alarm over the impact of AI on jobs, human interaction, and youth development.
He stressed the need for caution as societies integrate AI into governance, education, healthcare, and the economy, noting that it was vital to protect “healthy, fair and sound lifestyles, especially for the good of younger generations.”
According to the Holy Father, while AI may speed up processes and handle routine tasks efficiently, it should never be viewed as a substitute for human creativity, memory, or emotion.
“AI’s static memory is in no way comparable to the creative, dynamic power of human memory,” he said.
“Our personal life has greater value than any algorithm, and social relationships require spaces for development that far transcend the limited patterns that any soulless machine can pre-package.”
The pontiff also charged political leaders to ensure that the development and application of AI is governed by ethical standards that respect human dignity and prioritise the welfare of future generations.
Recall that Pope Leo had earlier warned about the potential misuse of AI by journalists and media houses, urging them to uphold accuracy and integrity while integrating the technology into newsrooms.
His renewed comments come at a time when the global debate over the regulation of AI is intensifying, with calls growing louder for legislation that balances innovation with human rights.
