Scottish giants Rangers are preparing to place greater responsibility on Nigerian defender Emmanuel Fernandez after manager Derek McInnes praised the centre back’s impressive development and backed him to become one of the club’s key players in the 2026/27 season.
Fernandez enjoyed a breakthrough campaign during his first year at Ibrox, emerging as one of Rangers’ most reliable performers despite arriving with limited experience at the highest level. His consistent displays in defence, combined with an eye for goal from set pieces, quickly earned him the admiration of supporters and coaching staff.
Now, with a full season behind him and a new campaign approaching, McInnes believes the Super Eagles defender is ready to take another significant step in his career.
The Rangers manager acknowledged that both Fernandez and fellow young signing Youssef Chermiti arrived at the club carrying the burden of high expectations because of their transfer fees and growing reputations.
However, McInnes believes both players have already shown enough quality to prove they belong at one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.
He explained that every footballer who joins Rangers understands the responsibility that comes with wearing the famous blue jersey, where winning trophies is always the minimum expectation. At the same time, he stressed that younger players need patience, proper guidance and time to develop into complete professionals.
According to the Rangers boss, Fernandez demonstrated his enormous potential during several matches last season, but the next challenge is to deliver that level of performance consistently throughout an entire campaign.
Fernandez’s journey to becoming a Rangers regular has been anything but straightforward.
Born in London to Nigerian heritage, the towering defender did not follow the traditional pathway taken by many elite footballers. His early career included spells with Brentford’s academy before moving through the lower divisions of English football with Gillingham, Ramsgate, Spalding United and Barnet. Those experiences helped shape his resilience and determination before he eventually established himself at Peterborough United.
His impressive performances at Peterborough convinced Rangers to invest in his services ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Although his early months in Glasgow were challenging as he adjusted to the demands of Scottish football, Fernandez gradually forced his way into the starting lineup through hard work and impressive performances.
By the end of the season, he had become one of Rangers’ standout players, making 33 appearances in all competitions and contributing six goals from central defence, an outstanding return for a defender. His goals, aerial dominance and composure on the ball made him a valuable asset, even though Rangers narrowly missed out on the Scottish Premiership title.
His remarkable progress was also recognised by supporters, who voted him Rangers Men’s Player of the Year after an outstanding debut campaign.
Fernandez’s rise at club level has also transformed his international career.
Eligible to represent both England and Nigeria, he committed his future to the Super Eagles and earned his first senior call up earlier this year. He made an immediate impact, impressing on his debut before scoring his first international goal in only his second appearance for Nigeria.
Those performances have strengthened his reputation as one of the country’s most promising defenders and positioned him as an important part of the Super Eagles’ long term plans.
Despite attracting reported interest from several European clubs following his outstanding season, Fernandez has made it clear that his immediate focus remains on Rangers.
The defender recently expressed his desire to continue improving under Derek McInnes, saying he believes there is still significant room for growth in his game. He admitted that he is not yet the finished product and is determined to become an even better defender through hard work and continuous learning.
McInnes shares that belief.
The Rangers manager revealed that he has already held detailed conversations with Fernandez during pre season, identifying aspects of his defensive game that can still be refined, particularly his positioning and decision making inside the penalty area.
The coach believes that improving those details will help transform Fernandez from an excellent young defender into one of the Scottish Premiership’s leading centre backs.
With Rangers aiming to reclaim the league title and compete strongly in European competitions, Fernandez is expected to play a central role in the club’s ambitions.
His combination of physical strength, composure, leadership qualities and attacking threat from set pieces has already made him one of the most exciting Nigerian defenders playing in Europe.
As the new season approaches, expectations around the 25 year old continue to grow. If he can build on the impressive standards he set during his debut campaign, Fernandez could establish himself not only as a defensive leader at Rangers but also as one of the Super Eagles’ most dependable players ahead of major international competitions.
For both club and country, the coming months could represent another important chapter in the remarkable rise of a defender whose career has been built on perseverance, steady improvement and an unwavering determination to succeed.
