Real Madrid through to UCL last 8

It was a pulsating game, Wednesday night when Defending Champions Real Madrid ousted Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

Holders Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 4-2 on penalties to set up a Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal.

The all-Spanish tie had finished 2-2 on aggregate, after full time and extra time saw Atletico Madrid lead 1-0.

Conor Gallagher struck in just 27 seconds of the second leg to bring Atletico level overall.

The first leg had finished 2-1 in favour of Real Madrid, at the Santiago Benebeu last Tuesday.

Neither side could find a winning goal before the end of extra time.

That meant penalties were needed to determine the outcome.

After the first three had been converted, former Manchester City forward Alvarez stepped up to take Atletico’s second.

He slipped while taking it, but the ball ended up in the back of the net.

While it was initially given, the successful spot-kick was subsequently ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR).

Alvarez was deemed to have touched the ball twice as he struck his effort.

Fede Valverde converted his penalty to put Real 3-1 ahead.

Although Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved Lucas Vazquez’s spot-kick to briefly give Atletico hope, Marcos Llorente hit the bar.

Antonio Rudiger then stepped up to squeeze home the decisive penalty to send Real through.

Atletico fans felt so bad.

Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid 4-2 on penalties.

Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde and Antonio Rudiger all scored their kicks for Real Madrid.

They will face Arsenal in the last eight, having kept alive their hopes of winning a record-extending 16th Champions League trophy.

Arsenal on the other hand played out a 2-2 draw at home to PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands.

The Gunners qualified for the last eight on a massive 9-3 aggregate, after having won the first leg away by 7-1.

According to reports, many felt Real won the shootout because Julian Alvarez’s kick was disallowed.

The reason for the kick being disallowed was for touching the ball twice.
