Recession: Stop forming talakawas, group blasts Saraki, ors
A human rights’ group, Committee for Democracy and Rights of the People (CDRP) has lambasted Senate President, Bukola Saraki and some other elites for comparing themselves with people in the country in terms of economic challenge.
The group described it as “mockery of the collective psyche of badly impoverished citizens” hearing from some Nigerian leaders, including Senator Saraki who is facing multiple litigations bordering on corruption and related matters.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Secretary General of the group, Comrade Waheed Saka on Monday in Osogbo.
According to the group, Senator Bukola Saraki voicing the sentiment of political elites that “Nigerian leaders like ordinary Nigerians are also facing and experiencing economic hardship” is not only in bad faith, but also a mockery of the people of Nigeria
CDRP said it is on record how Saraki and others enriched themselves, their family and cronies with the collective God-given resources of country.
They added that it is also on record how political elites are taking pensions as former governors, yet taking millions of naira as legislators of National Assembly.
The statement reads: “The padded budget controversy is still very fresh and the Chairman of our National Assembly is claiming “Talakawas” is highly unfortunate and laughable
“As a group among the people and for the people, we have a clear understanding of what Nigerian masses and ordinary Nigerian people are facing in their fatherland where the few convert what belong to many for their own consumption
“It is mockery and unheard of from some serving political office holders especially those who owe Nigerian masses unreserved apology one way or the other for misconduct of using democratic privilege in a country where institutionalised corruption is the norm to be using air space to present black as white for us and by extension to be playing politics with economic hardship facing Nigerians.
“CDRP consider on behalf of voiceless ordinary Nigerians that pains and discomforts being experienced by the people at the moment in the name of claimed economic recession is more than what any opportunist politician can be taken for fun.
“There are many graduates in robbery business because of unemployment, some turned beggars and political thugs in the absence of equity and sense of belonging to our collective God-given resources, no thanks to criminality of the political elite class which Saraki is an undistinguished member.
“To this end, CDRP rejected Saraki’s commiseration with ordinary Nigerian citizens who are truly in the war of economic hardship and hence warned against any act of mockery coming out from our politicians.”
