Cristiano Ronaldo returned to club football in style on Friday night, scoring his 980th career goal as Al-Nassr cruised to a 3-0 victory over Al-Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League.

The Portuguese superstar opened the scoring in the 23rd minute before Samu Costa doubled the advantage seven minutes later, with Kingsley Coman completing the victory in the 77th minute at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh.

For Ronaldo, the night represented more than another victory in Saudi Arabia. His goal brought him to within 20 strikes of the extraordinary 1,000-goal milestone, keeping alive one of the most remarkable individual scoring pursuits in football history.

The match was also his first appearance for Al-Nassr following the recent controversy surrounding his departure from Portugal’s national team camp. With questions surrounding his international situation, the 41-year-old responded on the pitch in the manner that has defined much of his career: by scoring goals.

Al-Nassr supporters welcomed their captain with chants and a banner celebrating his greatness before kick-off. Ronaldo rewarded their backing with an important contribution as his side looked to strengthen its position near the top of the league table.

The home side started on the front foot, with Ronaldo involved in the attacking action as Al-Nassr searched for an early breakthrough. The captain even had a goal ruled out for offside before eventually finding the net with a finish that counted.

The decisive moment arrived in the 23rd minute. Coman drove forward with the ball, worked his way into a shooting position and struck towards goal. Al-Diriyah goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah could not hold the effort, pushing the ball back into the danger area.

Ronaldo reacted quickest. Positioned inside the penalty area, the veteran striker pounced on the rebound and calmly sent the loose ball into the unguarded net.

It was not a spectacular long-range effort or an acrobatic finish, but it demonstrated the instincts that have helped Ronaldo build an extraordinary goalscoring record. He anticipated where the rebound would fall, reacted before the defenders could recover and made no mistake from close range.

The goal was his 980th in senior career football, leaving him just 20 away from reaching 1,000. With every appearance now carrying the possibility of another step towards that historic mark, the milestone has become an increasingly compelling storyline surrounding the Portuguese forward.

Al-Nassr were not content to protect their narrow advantage, and they extended their lead in the 35th minute through Costa.

The midfielder rose to meet a corner delivered by fellow Portuguese international Joao Felix and directed a header into the net. The set-piece execution gave Al-Diriyah another problem to solve and sent the hosts into the closing stages of the first half with a comfortable 2-0 advantage.

Costa’s goal highlighted Al-Nassr’s threat beyond their celebrated captain. While Ronaldo continued to attract attention, the home side showed that its attacking options could hurt opponents through different routes, including the aerial strength and timing required to convert a well-delivered corner.

Al-Diriyah attempted to find a response, but Al-Nassr remained in control. The visitors had a promising opportunity to reduce the deficit when Enzo Millot tried his luck from distance after the restart. His curling effort forced goalkeeper Bento into action, with the Al-Nassr goalkeeper tipping the ball around the post.

The save helped preserve the two-goal cushion and frustrated Al-Diriyah’s attempt to make the contest more competitive.

Al-Nassr also came close to adding a third before the interval. Joao Felix saw an effort cleared off the goal line by Qasem Lajami, denying the hosts what would have been an even more commanding lead. It was a crucial intervention from the defender, although it ultimately failed to change the direction of the match.

The third goal finally arrived in the 77th minute, with Coman getting his name on the scoresheet after already playing a decisive role in Ronaldo’s opener.

The French winger surged forward after receiving a through ball from Sadio Mane, broke into the penalty area and went through on goal. With Ronaldo available alongside him, Coman had the option of squaring the ball for his captain to attempt to score again.

Instead, the winger backed himself and finished past Abdullah to make it 3-0.

The goal settled the contest and completed a convincing performance from Al-Nassr. It also meant Ronaldo’s night ended with one goal towards his personal milestone, while Coman and Costa shared the remaining scoring honours.

For Al-Nassr, the result provided an important boost as the team continued its domestic campaign. The clean sheet was another positive, with Bento making an important intervention when Millot threatened after the break.

Ronaldo’s return, however, was always going to be the headline story. The forward has spent more than two decades building a reputation for scoring in the biggest moments, and his latest goal showed that his appetite for finding the net remains undiminished.

Reaching 1,000 career goals would be an extraordinary achievement, and the target is now within sight. Twenty more goals separate Ronaldo from the milestone, although the time required to reach it will depend on his fitness, appearances and scoring form.

Friday’s performance offered an encouraging start to the next stage of that pursuit. Ronaldo returned, scored, and helped his team secure all three points.

For the supporters who filled Al-Awwal Park with chants of his name, it was another reminder that even at 41, the Portuguese icon remains capable of producing moments that capture the attention of football fans around the world.
