Russia fumes over Israel airstrike assaults on Iran as war intensifies

Russia has publicly condemned Israel’s ongoing airstrikes on Iranian territory as illegal under international law.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement Tuesday, June 17, 2025, via its official Telegram channel.

“Israel’s military attacks on Iran are unlawful and risk escalating regional instability,” the ministry said.

Moscow emphasized that diplomacy remains the only legitimate path to resolving disputes over Iran’s nuclear program.

It reiterated that Tehran remains a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has shown commitment.

“Iran has issued clear statements affirming its NPT obligations,” the statement read.

Russia acknowledged that Iran has signaled willingness to meet with U.S. representatives for further diplomatic engagement.

This comes amid an intense regional conflict sparked by Israel’s massive bombing campaign against Iranian nuclear and military sites.

Russia also called for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to publish full, independent assessments of facility damage.

“We expect unvarnished, objective reporting from the IAEA,” Russia’s statement added.

The IAEA has not yet released formal damage reports on Iranian nuclear infrastructure.

Moscow’s response follows days of Israeli aerial assaults on targets in Tehran, Natanz, and other key Iranian locations.

Iran has reported hundreds of casualties, including scientists and military officers, while insisting it will retaliate.

The Russian government has long positioned itself as a diplomatic intermediary in Middle East nuclear disputes.

President Vladimir Putin has not yet commented personally on the Israel–Iran crisis.

However, Kremlin officials are reportedly in contact with both Iranian and Israeli leadership through backchannels.

The UN Security Council has called an emergency session to discuss the escalating conflict and potential breaches of international law.

As tensions grow, Russia has called for maximum restraint from all parties.

It warns that continued hostilities could lead to a catastrophic regional war involving global powers.

“The situation demands diplomacy, not war,” the Russian ministry concluded.
