Reacting on his Twitter handle, @ShehuSani, Senator Sani urged the Nigerian Senate not to approve any military action against Niger Republic, insisting that he is being “misled by foreign powers”.
He tweeted:
“The Nigerian Senate should NOT approve any military action against Niger Republic. This country should not be plunged into war and eventually stuck in war in the Sahel. President Tinubu shouldn’t allow himself to be misled by foreign powers. Saudi in Yemen, America in Afghanistan and now Russia in Ukraine should teach us a lesson that war doesn’t end in days, weeks or months.
“Senators should weigh the implications and consequences of their decisions, especially those senators representing states along the Niger Border. Weaponising electricity supplies to Niger is also condemnable. President Tinubu should continue to explore diplomatic channels and save the lives of those who will be sacrificed. That’s my view.”
Investigative journalist, David Hundeyin, wondered what is Tinubu’s interest in Niger when Nigeria is classified as one of the world’s poorest countries without adequate access to electricity, clean water, good roads and modern healthcare.
Tweeting on his Twitter handle, @DavidHundeyin, he said:
“You come from some of the world’s poorest countries where universal access to electricity, clean water, all-weather roads, and modern healthcare are still 40 years away. Why on earth would it be your priority to help two of the world’s biggest bullies fight their forever war?”
Other Nigerians react
Lucas, @anuforo:
“How can Nigeria go to war against the Niger Republic just because of a military coup in that country? Habaaaa! Nigeria has its own domestic problems of insurgency, economic crisis and failed election. Our Naira is at its lowest ebb in value since the history of the country…
“This is the period Nigeria needs a seasoned leader who can stand tall and chart a cause for the country’s economic problem…unfortunately, we have come short of it at the moment. The APC Tinubu-led government should not drag the country into another colossal crisis otherwise, the refugee crisis the country will experience will be unimaginable. Already, our IDP camp is becoming unmanageable. “A stitch in time saves nine”.”
Mahdi Shehu, @shehu_mahdi:
“WAR WITH NIGER REPUBLIC: PLEASING FRANCE/ MARCO. The country with the greatest influence on Tinubu today is France. He relies on their doctors for survival, his oil strategy, on his hide & seek politics. All of these are managed seamlessly by the Choghoury- Choghoury brothers.”
Oke’y Azubike, @OkeyAzubike:
“We were told that a good part of our national budget is funded with borrowed funds. Are we also going to fund this impending war with borrowed funds? What was our gain for putting over ₦5 Billion to fund our military intervention in Liberia? Let’s think twice!”
El-wageens, @ElWageens:
“Tinubu is speaking on behalf of the entire ECOWAS countries, meanwhile it’s a collective move by ECOWAS and their is no way he can deny it as a team leader. Though the war can never be an option at this trial time of ours. Hopely, they will engage them with full dialogue.”
Yusif Nasir Saleh, @yusifnasir:
“The war with Niger Republic is not only pleasing France, but is a battle for it’s uranium by the West and America, considering the fact that France get it cheaper and sell it to America and Europe at 100 times the price it gets from Niger.
Okey Ugwu, @OkeyUgwu01:
“Those who urge Tinubu to hastily go to war with Niger without totally exhausting all diplomatic channels of dialogue, forget that bombs know no boundaries. Both sides will experience casualties and most of the time, innocent civilians become the victims. I insist it’s too hastily
𝘿𝙧 𝙀𝙡 𝙈𝙤, 𝙋𝙨𝙮 𝘿, @Drelmoatiku:
“The kind of massive support the coupist in Niger Republic are enjoying from the local population due to years of impoverishment by the political class would make any military intervention a very difficult and wasteful endeavor. Tinubu must resist the pressure from war mongers and abort the mission now.
Morris Monye, @Morris_Monye:
“Tinubu will go to war with Niger Republic. It will be a long drawn war that will be very expensive to Nigeria and Nigerians. The war will only favour the West, Tinubu himself (Legitimacy from the West) and Defence contractors. I wish all involved well.”
Shehu Gazali Sadiq, @Shehusky:
“Tinubu wants to use war with Niger as a shield from possible sack from Aso Rock by the PEPT. War or no war, the judiciary is on trial. #AllEyesOnTheJudiciary”
BIG D, @OZ_VIDHO:
“The NSC should call Tinubu to order, most core northerners got relatives in Niger and the Northwest Nigeria is mainly dependent on raw food supplies from Niger. This proxy war is very much avoidable. Let the spirit of pan-Africanism live on! Patria o Muerte (Country or Death)!
Lawrence I. Okoro, @LawrenceOkoroPG:
“Bola Ahmed Tinubu wants to bring war upon us. What’s his interest in Niger?”
Kennedy, @amadikennedy99:
“Tinubu wants to gamble with Nigerian citizens’ lives by going to war with Niger. The outcome will certainly not be good with Governments of Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea and the Wagner forces of Russia pledging their support for Niger. Say NO to WAR with Niger.”
