Senate moves against DSTV, Summons NBC, CPC

Senate on Wednesday summoned the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) on the need to address what it described as high-headedness of the Pay TV Company.

The Upper Chamber also accused that DSTV has been engaging in negative and unhealthy trade practices in Nigeria due to monopoly the organisation enjoys on satellite market.

The decision of the Senate was sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Isah Hamma Misau who accused Multichoice of excesses in Nigeria and the need to quickly call the leadership of the company to order.

Leading debate on the motion, senator Misau noted that the excesses of Multichoice have been the reason it has constantly been in the news over different legal battles from aggrieved subscribers in Nigeria.

He said many subscribers have been dissatisfied with the programming service and outrageous subscription hikes across the various bouquets offered by DSTV, while complaints by them have been growing consistently.

He said Nigeria should take an urgent step in curbing the excesses of Multichoice because a lot of Nigerians love and watch football matches while following the English Premier League (EPL) through the DSTV.

He recalled that based on complaints by Nigerians, the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) had commenced investigation into the operation of the DSTV, most especially on its alleged consumer rights violations with a view to redressing the abuse.
