IBADAN, NIGERIA — Seven people have died in a multiple-vehicle crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Two others were injured in the accident. The crash occurred early Monday at Kara, along the Ibafo-Lagos corridor in Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident. It said three vehicles were involved in the fatal collision.

The vehicles were a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC truck, a white MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter.

According to the FRSC, nine male passengers were involved in the crash. Seven died, while two sustained injuries.

The accident occurred at about 12:03 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The FRSC Ibafo Outpost Command received the report at about 4:04 a.m. Officers arrived at the scene five minutes later.

The Ogun State Sector Command described the incident as a fatal multiple road traffic crash.

Preliminary findings identified speed violation as the probable cause. The agency stressed that the finding remains subject to further investigation.

The crash occurred during the early hours of the day. Darkness and reduced visibility can increase driving risks, especially on busy highways.

FRSC officials have repeatedly urged motorists to exercise caution during night journeys. They have also warned drivers against excessive speed.

The agency said the deceased victims were evacuated from the scene. The Ogun State Ambulance Service handled the evacuation.

The two injured victims were also removed from the scene. They were taken away for medical attention.

The damaged vehicles were later handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Ibafo.

The handover was made for further investigation and necessary action.

The crash has once again raised concerns about road safety on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The highway is one of Nigeria’s busiest major roads. It carries heavy traffic between Lagos and several parts of the country.

The route also records frequent crashes involving trucks, trailers, buses and private vehicles.

Earlier incidents have also been linked to excessive speed and loss of control. Authorities have continued to call for greater caution among motorists.

Following Monday’s crash, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to drive responsibly.

He specifically warned drivers of articulated vehicles against excessive speed.

He also advised motorists to maintain safe following distances. Drivers were further urged to remain alert throughout their journeys.

Ogunjobi stressed the need for additional caution when driving at night.

He noted that poor visibility and fatigue could increase the likelihood of road crashes.

The warning comes as road safety agencies continue efforts to reduce deaths on Nigerian highways.

Speeding remains one of the major concerns raised by road safety officials.

Driving at excessive speed reduces the time available for motorists to react to sudden obstacles. It can also make collisions more severe when they occur.

The FRSC therefore continues to encourage motorists to obey speed limits. Drivers are also advised to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.

For families of the seven victims, however, the warnings came too late.

The crash has left seven people dead and two others receiving medical care.

Authorities are expected to continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The FRSC has also urged motorists to learn from the tragedy.

As traffic continues along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, road users are being reminded that careful driving can prevent avoidable deaths.

The agency extended its condolences to the families of those who died. It also wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
