Shakira has opened up about the emotional toll of her highly publicised split from former footballer Gerard Piqué in 2022, describing the experience as one of the most difficult periods of her life.
In a recent interview, the Colombian music star reflected on her journey after the breakup, saying it challenged her understanding of strength and resilience.
“I always thought that I was more fragile or weaker than what life proved me to be,” she said.
The separation, which ended the singer’s 11-year relationship with Piqué, later inspired her global hit Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53, released a year after the split. The track, widely interpreted as referencing alleged infidelity by the former footballer, became one of Shakira’s biggest commercial successes in years and marked her return to the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10.
Shakira described the songwriting process as deeply therapeutic, explaining that it helped her process her emotions during the difficult period.
“It was just pure catharsis. I really needed to write about what I was going through and not have any censor,” she said.
She added that music served as a form of emotional healing, comparing it to therapy and saying it helped her navigate grief, anger, and acceptance. The singer also credited her close friends and family for supporting her through the transition.
The singer, who shares two sons, Milan and Sasha, with Piqué, said motherhood played a central role in helping her rebuild her life and stay grounded.
“Life is a bitch, but it’s so worth living because friends are there for you,” she said, reflecting on the challenges of heartbreak.
Shakira also spoke about the importance of life lessons, noting that even painful experiences contribute to personal growth.
“Even for the people that leave you with scars, because they just make us better,” she added.
She explained that despite emotional struggles, she had to remain strong for her children and continue daily responsibilities.
“When your world collapses, you have to get up and pay the bills and still prepare breakfast and take your kids to school. Life needs to go on,” she said.
The singer further reflected on motherhood, saying it gave her a new perspective on life and strength.
“The moment I became a mother, I saw life through a different perspective, and my kids are not only the best thing that happened to me, but I’ve learned so much from them every day,” she said.
Although previously linked to other public figures, Shakira said her current focus remains on raising her children. She added that she is not currently open to relationships, noting that her priority is motherhood.
Following the split, Shakira relocated from Spain to Miami with her sons, where she continues to balance her personal life with her global music career.
