A tragic incident struck during a girls’ football tournament in Mexico as a 15-year-old player slumped and died.

The victim, Atziri Ledif Galeana Valencia, was playing for Chivas Lcz in the tournament final against Toriz on Saturday.

She collapsed suddenly in the 72nd minute of the match, causing panic among players and officials on the pitch.

Reports indicate that the match held during a severe heatwave with temperatures rising above 34 degrees Celsius.

Medical responders rushed onto the pitch and attempted to revive her using CPR, oxygen, and cold compresses.

Despite efforts, Atziri was later rushed to the hospital in an ambulance but sadly gave up the ghost.

The organisers immediately suspended the final and cancelled all matches slated for Sunday following the tragic event.

Michoacan State Prosecutor’s Office has since launched a full investigation into the incident.

Authorities aim to determine if safety and health protocols were ignored or poorly implemented during the tournament.

Eyewitnesses claim the weather was harsh, raising concerns about why the match wasn’t postponed or rescheduled.

The organisers, Liga Deportiva de Guacamayas, came under scrutiny as families demand answers over the unfortunate death.

In a tribute, Chivas Lcz described Atziri as a champion and a warrior who left a strong legacy.

“The Chivas Lcz family is facing a dark moment, saying goodbye to our dear Atziri Galeana,” the club said.

“You will always live in our hearts. Your impact on the team, coaches, and supporters is unforgettable,” it added.

The emotional tribute said she left a mark that can never be erased from their football history.

“You exited as a true champion. We will remember this championship for you, forever our warrior,” the message read.

The league management also issued a condolence message, joining the football community in mourning the young player.

“We deeply regret the unfortunate event during the Women’s Youth final between Chivas and Arcelor Mittal Toriz,” it said.

“We stand with Atziri’s family, friends, and teammates in this moment of sorrow and pain,” the league stated.

A floral tribute was also shared on social media in honour of Atziri’s memory by the tournament organisers.

Fans have taken to social media to express shock and demand better welfare for young athletes.

Several observers criticised the decision to hold the final despite the harsh weather condition on that day.

Atziri’s death has sparked renewed debates on safety measures in youth sports, especially during extreme weather.

Authorities have promised a thorough investigation to prevent a recurrence of such a devastating tragedy.
