At least six people have died and 14 others were injured in a fatal crash in Ebonyi State.
The accident occurred on Friday morning near the Nkalagu Flyover along the Nkalagu–Enugu Expressway.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), a commercial bus collided with a Mercedes-Benz tipper truck around 9:40 a.m.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in Ebonyi State, Anthony Ogbodo, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement.
Mr Ogbodo said the crash resulted from dangerous overtaking along the busy route. He added that FRSC officers arrived within five minutes after receiving a distress call. Their quick response helped prevent further casualties.
He explained that 22 people were involved — 10 females and 12 males. Six victims, including three men and three women, died instantly. Fourteen others, nine men and five women, sustained serious injuries. Two male passengers escaped unhurt.
FRSC officials and Red Cross workers evacuated the victims to nearby hospitals. Those with critical injuries were taken to Annunciation Hospital and the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu. Others were treated at the Ezzamgbo General Hospital in Ebonyi State.
Mr Ogbodo said officers also cleared the road to restore traffic flow. He listed items recovered at the scene, including two Itel phones, a vehicle key, and ₦2,000 cash.
He warned motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and over-speeding, especially along the Nkalagu–Enugu corridor.
“This unfortunate incident is a stark reminder that reckless overtaking and impatience kill. Drivers must value life over speed or time,” he cautioned.
Residents Blame Road Design
Meanwhile, residents have blamed poor road design for the crash. They urged both the federal and state governments to fix the Enugu–Abakaliki Expressway, especially the Nkalagu axis.
A resident, Emmanuel Eze, took to Facebook to appeal to Governor Francis Nwifuru and Minister of Works, Dave Umahi. He asked them to remove concrete central pavements along the expressway.
Mr Eze claimed that the heavy concrete dividers made it impossible for drivers to veer off during emergencies.
“For many years, this road has been a death trap. Please remove these pavements before more lives are lost,” he wrote.
He added that while politicians move with security escorts, ordinary road users are left vulnerable.
The tragic crash adds to the growing number of fatal road accidents on Nigerian highways, especially in the South-East region.
