The Edo State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has issued a new directive to all council chairmen in the state.
According to the group, council bosses must now wear caps bearing President Bola Tinubu’s insignia during official meetings.
Edo ALGON chairman, Sunny Ekpeson, announced the order on Saturday through his media aide, Agbukor Lucky Apeakhuye. The announcement followed a recent directive from Governor Monday Okpebholo on Thursday.
Mr. Ekpeson said the decision aims to show loyalty to President Tinubu and his leadership vision.
“This directive mandates all 18 local government chairmen across Edo State to ensure their officials wear customised caps bearing President Tinubu’s insignia during all official meetings at council secretariats,” he said.
He explained that the symbolic move was to strengthen grassroots support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the gesture is part of a broader plan to mobilize the pledged 2.5 million votes for Tinubu from Edo State.
“The 2.5 million votes pledged for President Tinubu must not remain mere words,” Mr. Ekpeson stated. “We must start building momentum from the grassroots, and that includes acts that reflect our commitment.”
He added that the new rule would also apply to supervisory councillors, senior special assistants, and special assistants across the 18 local government areas.
Mr. Ekpeson said the use of Tinubu-branded caps is not just a fashion statement but a show of solidarity.
“It reminds us daily that we belong to the same political family and share the same vision for Nigeria’s progress,” he added.
Political observers say the move could stir controversy as it blends governance with partisan symbolism. However, ALGON maintains the gesture is voluntary and reflects “political alignment” at the grassroots level.
